The Burlesque Era

Welcome to The Life Crisis – The Burlesque Era.

If you’re having a life crisis, make a song and dance about it. Cover it in rhinestones. Become the tit of the joke.

In 2024, I somehow (accidentally on purpose) signed up to an afternoon of burlesque workshops with the legendary Gina Stirling – an international Burlesque superstar – at GFF Damien Studio in Manchester.

Overcome with sheer curiosity to learn about this intriguing (and often misunderstood) theatrical art form, coupled with the delightful unashamed freedom that comes with age, I was thrilled to discover a colourfully creative and passionate about performance community.

Welcomed with opera gloved hands, I danced alongside enthusiasts, costume creators, those reclaiming their sexuality, people of all pronouns, professional dancers – and quickly learned that nobody cheers for you louder than your fellow burlesque peers.

I got the bug and began attending regular workshops. Fans. Classic Tease. Bump and Grind. Rocklesque. I bought tickets to local burlesque shows. I created costume items. I danced (out of time) to choreographed routines. My life, outside of the dull day-to-day, became filled with whimsy and wit.

In 2025, Lady Wildflower hosted her annual student showcase at The Empty Space, Salford. It was at this event, after a long summer rhine-stoning and plotting, that I debuted my first act – Clockwork.

The joy I’ve uncovered from doing burlesque is a surprise to me (as much as it is my family!) and I hope to continue on this weird and wonderful journey for years to come.

Art Form

The burlesque world goes far beyond the art of seduction. For me, it celebrates diversity, individuality and creative quirkiness. When I’ve had a difficult day or life feels overwhelming, a burlesque workshop offers a rebellious freedom from mundanity. It has taught me to make friends with my flaws, fears and frights. Due to its risqué and provocative nature, it can easily be misconceived. Here are some links/which have helped me on my journey so far.
