The Ongoing Crisis

Help, I’m healthy (this week)

You know you’re an adult when you start making healthy choices.

But you know you’re truly an adult when your healthy choices (drumroll please) pay off.

Wahey!

(Oh no, does this mean I have to create a Tik-Tok account where I arrogantly impose my healthy choices upon other people so they too can lead a wholesome and unattainable lifestyle?)

It all began when I started doing weights at the gym. One thing lead to another and, before I knew it, the worst had happened … I began staying hydrated, eating eggs for breakfast, getting seven hours of sleep in at night, cutting down my social media time, taking care of my nutrition.

*That horrible moment when you realise health influencers might have had a point this whole time*

The other day, when a colleague asked me what I was up to in the evening, the unimaginable happened – I replied, without hesitation, ‘I’m off to the gym, then home to make a chicken salad.’

I heard what I’d said.

I meant it too.

We looked at each other, horrified.

To make things worse, I had gotten up early that morning and prepared dinner before I left the house so it was ready for when I came home.

My husband: ‘who is this creature, what has she done with my wife?’

It wasn’t all bad, one of the perks of saving time in your evening is that you have more time to sit and worry about all the choices you’re going to make tomorrow.

Things have gotten way out of hand since. I’ve been sitting down before bed with a herbal tea, reading excerpts from All on the Board and writing in a journal (yuck). A friend of mine even signed me up to a subscription for The Happy Newspaper.

On pancake day (brace yourself), I reduced my sugar intake by buying PROTEIN PANCAKES. I should be appearing on Gladiators any day now.

Of course these choices are all to do with the reality of being in your 30s – the sudden realisation of the fragility of life. It’s more than chicken salads, yoga and w*nky social media pages. (No, the irony is not lost on me that I am writing this on a blog).

Life is tough, it requires mental and physical strength. Watching our parents age and losing loved ones is a reminder to take better care of ourselves, not sink deeper into our demons.

Now if you don’t mind me, I’m off to drink water, get a decent night’s sleep and stick to some boundaries. Like an utter FOOL.
